Critique of Shelby’s “I Should Have Taken an Ambien”

The piece seems to be a late-night journal entry, indicated by the psychiatrist’s instructions for Caitlyn to write down her anxious thoughts without inhibition, but without the formatting of a journal entry (with the date), it simply reads like a stream of consciousness without the single block of text. Caitlyn’s description of the process makes for a great meta-fictive piece, however.  If she disregards punctuation and capitalization, I’d expect her to ignore traditional paragraph breaks as well.  The cyclical repetition of the hole in Caitlyn’s work pants, Mr. Garside’s spit and bullshit, and the Psychiatrist’s fruitless reminders are amusing.
